Jack Heyman, hero of the People, has a workshop on Labor Union ILWU's long history of defending political prisoners and fighting racist frameups and killings by polic, touching on historical examples of Sacco and Vanzetti and the Scottsboro Boys, both taking place before the 1934 Maritime Strike and San Francisco General Strike, and both being defended by the International Labor Defense. The presentation will cover ILWU's defense of Angela Davis, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Oscar Grant and this year's May Day march and rally in collaboration with the black community to protest the reign of police terror throughout the country today.

An appeals court has just overturned convictions for Megan Rice, Michael Walli and Gregory Boertje-Obed, imprisoned for entering and protesting a nuclear weapons site at Oak Ridge, Tenn., three years ago. Resentencing on lesser charges, and quite possibly immediate release, is expected.
Amazingly, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that the government failed to prove that the activists intended to "injure the national defense." (Maybe Venezuela, accused by President Obama of being a threat to the same, should appeal to the Sixth Circuit!)
The U.S. government has just dropped charges against eight members of the National Campaign for Nonviolent Resistance who nonviolently protested the U.S. military's environmental destruction with a march from the EPA to the Pentagon this past Earth Day.
"It can only be speculated why the charges were dismissed," said NCNR. "The eight activists were charged with 'Failure to Comply With a Lawful Order' and were scheduled to appear for trial on June 4 at the U.S. District Court in Alexandria, VA. The group was well prepared to challenge the charge and to speak some truth to power in the courtroom. Perhaps the U.S. attorney recognized that the defendants at the Pentagon were simply exercising their constitutionally-protected right to speak out against our government's wrong-headed policies. Or possibly he agreed with the defendants' messages."
In recent months there have been absurd indictments and sentences. But there have also been surprising acquittals and the dismissal of charges.
Freedom isn't free, it's won by continued protests of wars.

Regardless, the result of random violence serves to demonize all protesters.

Then, too, there is the reference to the jury verdict in the Oscar Grant case, to which some expressed their disagreement with rioting and vandalism. Sound familiar? I would not want to see this years May Day riot and the disruption of the City Council’s session on May 6 to be glorified by the Community Rejuvenation Project in its next mural commissioned at public expense. Oakland should be ashamed of the Alice Street Murals. You would think that the city would require that the public money it spends on public art would promote citizenship and good government as well as recognize achievement, contributions to the community, and community service. But I guess not.

This new book presents the history of the Chicano movement, exploring the colonialism and semi-colonialism that frames the Chican@ national identity. It also sheds new light on the modern repression and temptation that threaten liberation struggles by simultaneously pushing for submission and assimilation into Amerika. The principal authors, Cipactli of the Brown Berets - Prison Chapter and Ehecatl, have served long prison sentences due to their class and nationality, and have worked many years as members of United Struggle from Within, the anti-imperialist prisoner organization. This is the first book-length publication to come out of a MIM(Prisons)-led study group. This group included Chican@ scholars who come from the imprisoned lumpen class, spanning the divide imposed on the nation, north to south. The collaborative writing and editing effort began with the aim of bringing a clear analysis and history to the Chican@ masses. As the project grew, the final product is a vision of the path towards the liberation of Aztlán.

The state and teachers unions have launched a frontal attack on the June 2014 ruling, arguing that neither the judge nor the nine student plaintiffs in the well-funded suit presented any evidence that the laws have harmed students or violated their constitutional rights.
Tthe unions said those policy questions are legally irrelevant, because the students who filed the suit never showed that the laws affected their education. They showed no evidence that they were taught by an incompetent teacher who would have been fired or laid off had it not been for tenure or seniority protections, the unions said.

This is a giant company with 5,000 workers. It grows grapes and tree fruit in Fresno County, and sells under its Prima label.

- Maria Rivera: Gerawan sprayed the grape fields with chemicals at 5:40 a.m. We went to work at 6 a.m. At 7 a.m. I felt a burning on my neck. Then I felt sulfur all over my body. My eyes were very red and watery. When we left work I went to pick up my daughter who was 11 months old. I took her to the doctor that evening because she got bumps and rashes on her body. The doctor told me it was because of the chemicals that someone brought home.
- Blanca Cruz Vasquez: We were working very fast in the grapevines and didn’t have time to look down. I fell into a gopher hole, fell to the ground. They notified the foreman. He did not pay me any attention. He did not ask about my foot or my hand. My hand swelled up. A coworker tied a handkerchief around my hand and that is how I worked all day, with one hand.
- Guadalupe Martinez: [In] 2013, they put the ticket man to review all of us employees. Once, I was very thirsty and I asked if there was any water available. He saw that it was very far away from us so then [he] was inspecting the supervisors that day also he scolded the supervisor. The next day the supervisor came to me and asked me why I had reported her and the lack of water, that if I wanted the company to fire her. And I told her if the problem was that I asked for water, I would not ask for water again. I felt very frustrated because now I didn’t even have the liberty to ask for water. Now I am afraid that for next season I will not be recalled to work since she is accustomed to doing what she wants with her crew.
- Ana Garcia Aparicio: I’ve worked at the company la Prima for 10 years picking peaches and grapes. I’m a mother of 4 children and my work helps with my household costs. At this company we’ve had many issues and injustices. We receive warnings for one rotten grape and even get suspended for 1 or 2 days. This is the reason it is so important for us that our contract be implemented.
- Inez Garcia: During the picking of the peach we used very large ladders and we had to move them in the rows, go up and down the ladder while carrying two buckets full of fruit. The worst part of this was the men that were like two rows away from me were picking at $11.00 dollars an hour and I was doing the same work and getting paid $9.00 dollars an hour…. As a woman and a single mother I’ve felt my life has been very hard what else can I do, but continue suffering and working because if I don’t who will support me? I’m making this information public because Mother’s Day is near and I want the world to know how much a woman suffers and also a farm worker mother here in the San Joaquin Valley.
- Marina Cruz: I’m a mother of 5 children. I’ve endured abuse and humiliation because of the necessity to work for my children. ... I feel the support of the United Farm Workers and I know things will change with their help at the company. There will be better treatment [and] no more abuse or favoritism. But most of all we will be given the respect we deserve as farm workers.
- Much has changed for the better for farm workers because of the work my husband and the others began over five decades ago. But much more work needs to be done. So on Mother’s Day, please remember these women workers and mothers at Gerawan Farming, and how the UFW continues to fight for them. At this company we’ve had many issues and injustices. We receive warnings for one rotten grape and even get suspended for 1 or 2 days. This is the reason it is so important for us that our contract be implemented.
- Inez Garcia: During the picking of the peach we used very large ladders and we had to move them in the rows, go up and down the ladder while carrying two buckets full of fruit. The worst part of this was the men that were like two rows away from me were picking at $11.00 dollars an hour and I was doing the same work and getting paid $9.00 dollars an hour…. As a woman and a single mother I’ve felt my life has been very hard what else can I do, but continue suffering and working because if I don’t who will support me? I’m making this information public because Mother’s Day is near and I want the world to know how much a woman suffers and also a farm worker mother here in the San Joaquin Valley.
- Marina Cruz: I’m a mother of 5 children. I’ve endured abuse and humiliation because of the necessity to work for my children. ... I feel the support of the United Farm Workers and I know things will change with their help at the company. There will be better treatment [and] no more abuse or favoritism. But most of all we will be given the respect we deserve as farm workers.

The powerful medium of television is attempting to change the reputation the police have as being brutal, racist, corrupt and the protectors of wealthy and powerful interests. Television tries to legitimize the police by distorting on the screen what the police practice daily. Three major themes run through many of the police programs:
(1) The war against organized crime is very popular theme. Most people want the mafia stopped and feel the police should get the job done. But the impression TV programs give is that large resources are put into the fight against organized crime. Not only is this distortion, but the widespread corruption within many metropolitan police departments is partly due to friendly relations with organized crime.
(2) After the TV police have established themselves as mafia fighters, the programs often deal with the more sensitive issue of radicalism. Whether infiltrating radical political organization, suppressing protest or neutralizing terrorist group, the program portrays the police as protectors of property and life against the unprincipled fanatics. (3) The police programs cannot totally deny their bad image, so many of them will address the problem of brutality, corruption or racism, but only as it is manifested by one deviant police officer who is then relieved of his duty. This is intended to convince the viewer that the rest of the police force is free from these problems and is capable of cleaning its own house.

The researchers used different tests to estimate exposure to potential gas well pollution — varying the distance from the wells since there is no definitive distance that makes someone safe or exposed. “No matter how you estimate proximity, it always came up as exposure was significantly, much higher” in poor Pennsylvania communities, said lead author of the study Yelena Ogneva-Himmelberger, a Clark University assistant professor of Geographic Information Sciences for Development and Environment. She said the study raises environmental justice concerns as people under the poverty line often “have less mobility and access to information” about the potential ills of fracking, especially since the communities she looked at were rural areas without the amenities of larger cities and towns.She also found local clusters of gas wells disproportionately impacting the poor, elderly and those with lower education in West Virginia, and children in Ohio.
Most concern about proximity to gas wells stems from the potential for air pollution from drilling and leaks, and water pollution from the mix of chemicals pumped into the ground, radiation from the fractured rocks, or methane. [end excerpt]

First, PPW is not about surrounding cities with your peasant army. PPW, as a strategy or collection of strategies, is not some sort of historical reenactment of the Chinese Revolution. We should not confuse the whole scope of a theory with popular historical instances.
Second, PPW is not always adventurist and not without historical success. To suggest such would be to deny the victories of the world’s oppressed as they were carved through the hard fought people’s wars of the 20th century (and as some would argue the current struggles in places such as India and the Philippines).
Third, if you are going to criticize or discuss PPW, do some investigation first. Primarily so on its development as a political/military strategy. Common understandings, including on the sibling notion of universality, draw heavily from the Chinese experience and from the work of Mao Zedong. Although, the notion has developed steadily from the experiences of Gonzalo and his Shining Path to contemporary analysis provided by groups such as RCP-PCR and similar Maoist formations elsewhere. All of which compose what we mean when we say “Protracted People’s War”, as a historical, military, and political object of study.
PPW answers this through a series of tactics, methods, and strategy which can be briefly outlined as a political and military development of strategic ‘stages': from strategic defensive, to equilibrium, to offensive and the eventual defeat of the established state power. The prerequisite to such an endeavor is the building of a revolutionary party which commands “mass support” (as detailed by contemporary proponents) and which cultivates this support as the broader revolutionary scene matures. During PPW, base areas are established among the masses so that Dual Power of the communist sort can be constructed and the political/military readiness of the oppressed is advanced. PPW also adopts military tactics which can be definitive in asymmetric warfare where the opposing force is far more established and well-equipped. The critical advantage that proponents of PPW claim is the organic potential of the masses in making history for themselves (to sum it very crudely).
Summary of my points:
1. Protracted People’s War is not Universal.
2. Speculating on universal revolutionary strategy hurts the project of revolution.
3. Developing new theories of revolution requires us to challenge theoretical continuities, investigate, and ask new questions.
4. Asking new questions does not absolve the project of revolution; its a prerequisite to the project itself.
5. What is applicable regarding Protracted People’s War can be synthesized into a strategy of a new type.
With regard to the “emancipation of the proletariat” and its “new method of warfare”, which proletariat? Sure, the struggle of the proletariat in a specific circumstance may reveal a “new method of warfare” but is that method universal to the experiences of a proletariat of an entirely different national, economic, and historical character? No. If we really want to ‘return to the source’ let’s recall Marx informing us we need to organize the proletariat “as a class” not that it simply exists as such with all of this universal capacities.

Babyn Iar had also become the burial site of a dozen Ukrainian nationalists less than a decade earlier when president Viktor Yushchenko honored them with a memorial. The implication was clear: Ukrainian nationalists had suffered the same fate as the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Poroshenko did not mention that OUN members actually numbered among the perpetrators of the massacre. The law is explicit in its details, down to the ban on the coat of arms of the former GDR and the flag of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. (Interestingly, the law does not prohibit the flag of the People’s Republic of China.) The risk that the coat of arms of the GDR or the flag of the ČSSR would make a comeback and be used for political purposes in Ukraine must be regarded as slim.
Regarding symbolism with roots in Nazi Germany, it remains to be seen what the Ukrainian government will do about the insignia of the Azov battalion, a far-right paramilitary formation affiliated with Kyiv. These include the so-called Black Sun, the occult mosaic from the Wevelsburg castle, a popular symbol in neo-Nazi circles, and the Wolfsangel, a slightly modified version of the emblem of the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich. It is also unclear what consequences the law will have for the memorialization of the 14th Waffen-SS Division Galizien, which is commemorated in the names of streets and public spaces in several West Ukrainian localities, including Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Ternopil.
Given its phrasing, one aim of the law appears to be to equate Communism and Nazism, while also presenting them as external forces to which Ukrainian nationalism was inimical. A further indication of this is reflected in the accompanying law 2538-1, “Pro pravovyi status ta vshanuvannia pam’iati bortsiv za nezalezhnist’ Ukrainy u XX stolittii” (On the Legal Status and Honoring of the Memory of the Fighters for the Independence of Ukraine in the 20th Century), also sponsored by Shukhevych and Liashko’s Radical Party with the support of V’iatrovych’s UINP. Rather than forbidding the symbols of or propaganda for particular historical organisations, it legislates “honoring the memory of fighters for Ukrainian independence in the 20th Century.” Yet it resembles law 2558 in that it seeks to establish a particular interpretation of the past through bans and prohibitions.
Law 2538-1 itself makes rather odd reading: it reels off several dozen organizations and groups whose members were supposedly “fighters for Ukrainian statehood in the 20th century.” These include Ukrainian socialists, Russian monarchists, peasant insurgents, Ukrainian far-rightists and Soviet dissidents. Many people belonging to the bodies on this list actually opposed Ukrainian independence, and some even supported the creation of the Soviet Ukrainian Republic or became members of the Communist Party of Ukraine.
In addition, some of those bodies listed were demonstrably guilty of mass murder. For instance, the law protects the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UNR) and insurgent detachments active after 1917. These were responsible for the deaths of at least 20,000 Jews in the 1919 pogroms in Ukraine[3].
However, the most problematic groups on the list are the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its armed wing, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The OUN was a far right, clandestine terrorist organization that sought to establish a totalitarian, one-party, homogenous Ukrainian state under its own absolute leadership. It was deeply anti-Semitic and collaborated closely with Nazi Germany, particularly between 1939 and 1941. In 1941, it called for the mass murder of Jews, Poles, and Communists and played a key role in the wave of pogroms which swept Western Ukraine that year, claiming the lives of between 13,000 and 35,000 Jews. In 1943-44, the UPA carried out a brutal campaign of mass murder against the Polish minority in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia as part of its strategy of establishing an ethnically homogenous Ukrainian state. The most detailed studies list about 90,000 Polish victims of the OUN(b)-UPA, about half of which are known by name[4]. This is roughly equal to the total tally of victims of the Bosnian Civil War of 1992-95. The UPA also tolerated no dissent among the community it claimed to represent: its fighters tortured and murdered Ukrainians for the mere suspicion of treason; this might include nothing more than fulfilling the requisitioning demands of the Soviet state.
Another questionable group covered by the law is the Anti-Bolshevik Bloc of Nations (ABN). This organization was active from 1946 to 2000, and led, until 1986, by Yaroslav Stets’ko, a strongly anti-Semitic politician. In 1941, he had declared himself the head of a Ukrainian state and turned to Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco asking them to accept it as part of the “New Europe.” Shortly after that, he wrote to “support the destruction of the Jews and the expedience of bringing German methods of exterminating Jewry to Ukraine, barring their assimilation and the like”. The book review goes on to explain an interesting process during the history of the rapid European colonization of the old British Palestine region. [begin excerpt] Israel boasts “the only city in the world named after a novel,” Sharon Rotbard claims in White City, Black City. The novel in question is Theodor Hertzl’s Altneuland, known in English as “Old New Land” and in Hebrew as “Tel Aviv.”
Rotbard’s book opens (and closes) with a description of how in July 2003 UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee recommended inscribing the “White City” of Tel Aviv in its list of world heritage sites, in recognition of around a thousand “modernist” buildings it contains that are loosely inspired by the Bauhaus style. Rotbard, an Israeli architect who “decided some twenty years ago” to settle in the “Black City” of Jaffa, is skeptical about the Bauhaus influence on Tel Aviv’s architecture.
In a section titled “Urbicide,” Rotbard documents in chilling detail how in 1948 the city itself became a weapon. Amichai “Gidi” Faglin, a commander of the Etzel — more commonly known as the Irgun, a Zionist paramilitary group — led his fighters in what became known as a “mouse hole” technique. This involved placing his forces on either side of Palestinians in order to trap them.
Rotbard associates Faglin’s techniques with the later tactics of the Israeli military, as described by Brigadier-General Aviv Kovachi: “We no longer wish to conform to the alleys, the streets or the city … That is the reason we chose the method of passing through walls, like a worm chewing and ending up in a different place every time.”
Rotbard describes these strategies as “forced geography” — a deliberate subversion of the city as it was planned.
In 1948 the effects were devastating. Thousands drowned as they fled and were forced into the water.
Rotbard writes: “Of all the numerous, unwarranted times the phrase ‘push them into the sea’ has been flippantly bandied around in the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict, this may well be the only instance when the expression has literally taken form.”
Some of the ghosts in this account may never tell their stories, as Rotbard notes: “To this day it is unclear what happened to most of Jaffa’s residents.”
Rotbard explains how in the decades since 1948, Tel Aviv has continued to push anything unwanted into the shadow city at its side:
Everything unwanted in the White City is relegated to the Black City: … garbage dumps, sewage pipes, high voltage transformers, towing lots and overcrowded central bus stations; noise and air pollution factories and small industries; illegal establishments like brothels, casinos and sex shops; unwelcoming and intimidating public institutions such as the police headquarters, jails, pathological institutes and methadone clinics; and finally, a complete ragtag of municipal outcasts and social pariahs — new immigrants, foreign workers, drug addicts and the homeless … Paradoxically, this has actually ensured that the Black City is the most colorful, heterogeneous and cosmopolitan city space in the whole of Israel. He said Israel and its supporters should use courts around the world “to fight them back,” meaning critics of Israel, and that this is exactly what Shurat HaDin does.
“Hasbara is not the right term,” he continued in the question and answer session, “it’s a war … Each of us can become to be a warrior in this war. By talkbacking, by blogging, by disseminating articles, by raising our case.”
Hasbara (literally “explanation” in Hebrew) is the Israeli term for propaganda.
Justifying Israeli attacks on civilians was the main theme of the conference. Speaker after speaker lined up to reinterpret international law so that it would, supposedly, allow the killing of Palestinian and other Arab civilians.
This was justified with familiar canards about the supposed use by Palestinian resistance factions of “human shields,” which then inevitably results in Palestinian civilian dead. In other words, Israel was being forced to kill civilians.
Yaalon did similar by saying that the civilian neighborhoods Israel had bombed had contained “rocket rooms.”

It was a good time for photography. The pro-CPN-Maoist graffiti works that urged the villagers to boycott elections caught my attention. As someone who voted, I didn’t agree with the message. But I must admit that they were done nicely. There was something professional about those graffiti.
We were shown the way to Resham Shah’s homestay accommodation. He turned out to be the artist of the anti-election graffiti including the one at the entrance of the village that had caught our attention. It was a distinct work of, what’s the word I am looking for, “communist art” that you don’t see everywhere in Nepal. A former teacher and a Maoist activist, Shah had several janayuddha-era stories to tell.
But first, let’s start with the most recent event. Why didn’t the village vote?
“To send a message to Prachanda,” said Shah. “He lied to us.”
Here’s the story. Prachanda went to Thabang in 2011–two years after he stepped down from the Premiership and for the first time since the conflict ended, to celebrate the janayuddha anniversary. The villagers, led by local leaders of his party the UCPN-Maoist, handed him a list of eight demands. The top four, according to this page, were:
1. A road that connects the village to Fulibang. (Fulibang is connected by Jeep track to Sulichaur, a small town near district headquarter Libang; the tarred road from Dang passes through Sulichaur to reach Libang. A big rock of about 300 meters not very far from the village is the biggest obstacle, said Shah.)
2. Make the government declare the region of Jaljala a tourism destination. (Thabang is located on the lap of Jaljala hills, 3107 meters high. A few hours hike further up from Jaljala is Dharampani, 3600m, according to this page. It is worth noting that during the conflict, the Maoists had run a campaign called SiJa, pronounced sij but meant seize, abbreviating the Nepali spellings for Mt Sisne in Rukum and Jaljala).
3. A Tribhuvan University college.
4. An embankment on the stream (Thabang Khola) that flows from below the village.
Addressing the anniversary ceremony, a smiling Prachanda reportedly said:
“I was worried that Thabang would ask for something very big that I wouldn’t be able to provide. But Thabang asked for these simple things. You will get these demands fulfilled soon.”
That didn’t happen, Shah said.
A year later, in April 2012, Prachanda went to Thabang again to inaugurate Truffle plantation as part of a Tribhuvan University research. The local Maoist leaders, this time only those who were in his faction of the party, handed him the same list of demands.
The village today gets more money than many other Nepali villages get, by virtue of it being declared a model village. (That happened during Prachanda’s premiership. There are only a few government declared model villages in Nepal). According to this Kantipur report by journalist Kanshiram Dangi, Thabang had received more than Rs 70 million between late 2006 and mid 2013. Toilets and village-wide sewage are being built by the government money. A micro-hydro plant electrifies the village. A Nepal Telecom GSM cellular tower stands atop a nearby hill. The tower was closed for maintenance when I was there but Resham Shah was talking on his phone in NT’s CDMA network.
But it seemed as though the people of Thabang think the village deserves more and special treatment because of the role it played during conflict. Thirty-three people from the village died during janayuddha (People's War). The village was also portrayed as the headquarter of the Magarat state that the Maoists vowed to create, according to Shah. Thapa said they are not in a position to hold rallies, distribute pamphlets or engage in any anti-election activity in public, with the government arresting all their cadres and leaders in the streets. “We may need to change our tactics and go for an underground style [to show our presence]. We may even need to target road vehicles [to enforce our strike],” he further said.
The Baidya-group vandalized or torched vehicles that were parked or planted bombs, most of them hoaxes, only during the night on Sunday and early Monday morning, apparently to evade arrest. But there were no such incidents of vandalism and arson during the day. [end excerpt]

At that time, millions of them were not leaving the country to earn some money abroad. Therefore it was not worth reminding them of those beautiful times when we fought against enemies shoulder to shoulder, and Uzbekistan flourished. May it upset them too much? [end excerpt]

A few years ago, I was pleased to hear that the Pentagon would be funding a committee for the commemoration of the Vietnam War. I thought maybe, finally, we’ll get the record straight. But I didn’t have to read further than the keynote quote at the top of the new website to realize it was not to be.
Quoting President Richard Nixon, it read: “No event in history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam war. It was misreported then and is misunderstood now.”
I belong to the dwindling ranks of journalists who covered the war. We call ourselves “the Vietnam old hacks” and we got pretty exercised about this quote since it perpetuates the myth that the war would have worked out just fine if not for the discouraging words of some reporters. I wrote a letter to the chief of the commemoration committee, retired Lieutenant General Claude Kicklighter, protesting this slur on the thousands of journalists who tried to honestly cover the war, a slur coming from a U.S. president who was one of the most responsible for misleading the public about the war.
I badgered the committee for months but they were reluctant to take the quote down. I enlisted friends at the U.S. Army Center for History who strongly suggested to the committee that the quote was inappropriate. After six months through clenched teeth, they finally took it down. But many of the myths and falsehoods of the Vietnam War remain on the website.
So what went wrong in Vietnam? One of the prevailing and persistent myths is that the United States was betrayed by disloyal journalists. Even the U.S. Army commander in Vietnam, General William Westmoreland, subscribed to that old saw.
It doesn’t seem to matter how many times historians – even Army historians – challenge this myth, noting that the U.S. press on balance did a pretty good job covering a complex and dangerous conflict. The myth of the disloyal journalists who supposedly sabotaged what would have otherwise been an American victory just keeps coming back.
So what about the recent Pentagon suggestion that we journalists “misreported the war?” Am I satisfied with my own coverage of the Vietnam war? No, I’m not. I think ignorance of Vietnam history and culture at first and the limitations of TV news sometimes made the truth suffer. A minute and a half was about max for an evening news report. Not nearly enough time to describe the complex events of the Vietnam War.
I also found my ABC News editors in New York reluctant to sound negative about the war. Critical stories got brutally edited or just mysteriously disappeared before air time.
The only censorship that I experienced was from my own news company. At the U.S. Embassy when the last Vietcong sapper was killed or captured, I quickly filmed a “standupper.” To conclude my report, I said, “Since the Lunar New Year, the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese have proved they are capable of bold and impressive military moves that Americans never dreamed could be achieved. Whether they can sustain this onslaught for long remains to be seen.
“But whatever turn the war now takes, the capture of the U.S. Embassy here for seven hours is a psychological victory that will rally and inspire the Viet Cong. Don North ABC News Saigon.”
But my instant analysis never made it to the air on ABC News. I was accused of “editorializing” and the standupper was killed by some producer on the evening news. Ironically, however, the standupper with other out-takes ended up in the “ABC Simon Grinberg Library” where it was later found by producer Peter Davis and used in his Academy Award winning film, “Hearts and Minds.”
So it’s true that the truth about the Vietnam War often suffered, but not in the way Nixon’s quote suggested. Much of the U.S. media reporting put the war in too rosy – not too harsh – a light. More accurate journalism would have more consistently challenged what Neil Sheehan later called “A Bright Shining Lie,” the upbeat PR for a misguided war.
So what were the real lessons learned about journalism in the Vietnam War? In spite of difficulties, censorship and the fog of war, I believe much of our Vietnam reporting was accurate and has withstood the scrutiny of time. However, has U.S. war reporting today improved any more than American foreign policies?

Operation Condor Trial: A coordinated conspiracy to “Kidnap, Disappear, Torture and Kill” Latin American opponents of USA-backed Dictatorships

The National Security Archive today posted key documents on Operation Condor, presented by its Southern Cone analyst, Carlos Osorio, at a historic trial in Buenos Aires of former military officers. During 10 hours on the witness stand recently, Osorio introduced one hundred documents into evidence for the court proceedings. His testimony was profiled on May 3 in a major feature article published in the Buenos Aires daily, Pagina 12.
Operation Condor was an infamous secret alliance between South American dictatorships in the mid and late 1970s - a Southern Cone rendition and repression program - formed to track down and eliminate enemies of their military regimes. The Condor trial charges 25 high-ranking officers, originally including former Argentine presidents Jorge Videla (deceased) and Reynaldo Bignone (aged 87), with conspiracy to "kidnap, disappear, torture and kill" 171 opponents of the regimes that dominated the Southern Cone in the 1970s and 1980s. Among the victims were approximately 80 Uruguayans, 50 Argentines, 20 Chileans and a dozen others from Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador who were targeted by Condor operatives.
The tribunal requested Osorio’s testimony, which took place over two days on March 6 and 7, 2015, and included presentation of an Excel data base of 900 documents drawn mostly from U.S. government sources and from the Archive of Terror in Paraguay. Of these, Osorio focused on 100 declassified records selected for the tribunal, which was presided over by Judge Oscar Amirante, president of Federal Tribunal N° 1.
The National Security Archive obtained the U.S. documents through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), primarily from the Central Intelligence Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency and the State Department. Other notable records originated from the Chilean former secret police, DINA.
"We have been working on Operation Condor for years," Osorio said, "sifting through archives in many continents and building a body of knowledge and a trove of documents."
The Pagina 12 feature entitled "The Evolution of Condor," described Osorio’s presentation of "dozens" of documents to the tribunal, and the contribution the documents made in educating the judges on the genesis and evolution of coordinated repression in the Southern Cone. Osorio’s testimony covered a range of topics including the breadth of Condor operations, U.S. knowledge of those operations and the authenticity of the records being introduced into evidence.
The article highlighted one document Osorio presented that revealed the bilateral precedent for what would become a multilateral system of regional repression: a secret accord between the Argentine and Paraguayan military intelligence services to "Collaborate in the struggle against subversion…" and the "… internment [of dissenters]…" " The agreement was dated September 12,1972, and signed by Paraguayan intelligence officer Col. Benito Guanes Serrano. Three years later, Guanes would also be one of the five original signatories of the secret Condor accords. Osorio discovered the document in the Archive of Terror in Paraguay.
In September 1975, an assessment by a State Department intelligence analyst concluded that "The national security forces of the southern cone surpass the terrorists in cooperation at the international level…" Six weeks later, in Santiago, Chile, intelligence chiefs from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay signed an "Acta" officially establishing Operation Condor. Osorio introduced that pivotal document - provided to the Archive by a source in Chile - into evidence as well.
Two declassified U.S. documents presented to the tribunal underscored the contradictory response of high U.S. officials as they became aware of Condor operations in the summer of 1976. One well-known 13-page memorandum of conversation between Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Argentine Foreign Minister Admiral Cesar Guzzetti dated June 10, 1976, revealed Kissinger’s endorsement of the regional collaboration to repress the left. After Guzzetti informed Kissinger that the Southern Cone regimes were engaged in "joint efforts" to fight "the terrorist problem," Kissinger essentially supported this approach: "If there are things that have to be done, you should do them quickly. But you should get back quickly to normal procedures," according to the declassified transcript Osorio provided to the court.
"We want you to succeed. We do not want to harrass [sic] you," Kissinger concluded. "I will do what I can … "
After a CIA briefing to Kissinger’s top aides in late July 1976 on the Condor countries’ plans to send assassination teams around the world to eliminate opponents, the Secretary of State authorized a démarche to General Augusto Pinochet in Chile, General Jorge Videla in Argentina, and other military leaders in the region calling on them to cease and desist. "Government planned and directed assassinations within and outside the territory of Condor members has most serious implication which we must face squarely and rapidly," stated the secret August 13, 1976, cable to U.S. ambassadors in those nations. But the démarche was never delivered to any of the Condor regimes. After the U.S. ambassadors raised objections about presenting the démarche to the generals, on September 16, 1976, Kissinger rescinded it, and ordered "that no further action be taken on this matter."

The last article in the set posted above about the death of Osama bin Laden asks at the end if it is possible to conduct a DNA test with definitive results within 12 hours. Ironically, the same was claimed to be done with "Saddam Hussein", who, we now know, was not the man captured and put on trial (check his teeth!).

New York City's DNA lab has done such speedy tests for very rare high-priority cases, said Robert Shaler, director of the department of forensic biology in the office of the city's chief medical examiner. "If you have a single sample and you stop everything else you're doing, you can get it done," he said. That would occur, for example, if police have arrested a suspect and can hold him only temporarily unless DNA matches him to a serious crime, he said. "I'm not surprised" by reports that Saddam had been identified through DNA less than 24 hours after his capture, Shaler said Sunday. Details about a DNA test on Saddam were not entirely clear.
